Nagaon Paper Mill is a unit of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (A Government of India Enterprise) set-up with the installed capacity of 1 lakh MT per annum writing & printing paper in the North East part of the country. The mill is located at Jagiroad in Morigaon District of Assam State. It is an integrated Pulp & Paper manufacturing unit with captive Caustic Soda/ Chlorine & Di-oxide Plants. In order to ensure uninterrupted supply of power for operations of the plant, a captive power plant of 30 MW capacity has been installed and is in successful operation.

In pursuit of its goal to produce paper of world-class quality at affordable prices, HPC has been continuously modernizing and upgrading its plant and equipment of the mills. After achieving over 100% capacity utilization efforts are afoot to augment the installed capacity of Nagaon Paper Mill by 30%.

In the interactive meeting with HPC High School students (25 Nos.) held on 19.03.2005 at Training Centre, NPM, the following Energy Conservation measured implemented in the mill were discussed and energy efficient equipment and devices installed to conserve energy were shown to them.

A) Electrical system

1. Fitting of VFD in motors (Secondary air fan and F.D. Fan of Coal Fired Boiler)
2. Right sizing of motors (22 kW motor fitting in Re-chipper instead of 110 kW initially)
3. Replacing conventional choke with High Frequency Electronic Ballast)
4. Replacing high wattage HPMW (High Pressure Mercury Vapour) lamp with low wattage Metal Halide/HPSV (High Pressure Sodium Vapour) lamp
5. Using of transparent sheet instead of asbestos sheet for optimum use of natural light (Finishing House)

B) Water system

1. Recovering of water from under flow of the water treatment clarifier by constructing of two numbers settling pits in Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Thus reducing 5000 Kl per day of Intake water
2. Recycling of backwater. (In power Boiler fan bearing cooling water, pumps gland cooling water, Hydrobin decanting water, Air Conditioning cooling outlet water is recycled in cooling tower to reduce fresh water consumption)

C) Waste Heat Recovery system

1. Installation of additional Economizer in Coal Fired Boiler to reduce exhaust flue gas to 170oC from 240oC.
2. Recovery of heat from Blow down steam.
