Assam State Electricity Board
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), was originally established in the year 1958 in the composite state of Assam under the Electricity Act 1948. The existing Board was reconstituted in 1975 after the state was trifurcated into Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram in 1972.
The ASEB is responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the State. Two central government corporations, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) supplement the efforts of the state in power development in generation and transmission respectively.

Bihar State Electricity Board
Bihar State Electricity Board was constituted under section 5 of the Electricity Supply Act, 1948 vide Bihar Government's Notification No. 2884 - A/AI-121/57 dated 25th March, 1958 with effect from 1st April, 1958. The Board was given the responsibility of promoting coordinated development of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electricity in the State in an efficient and economic manner.

State of Chhattisgarh came in existence on 01.11.2000. State Government constituted separate State electricity Board vide notification No. 18 & 22/E. Dept/2000 dated 12.11.2000. C.S.E.B. became functional w.e.f. 01.12.2000.

Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) was established along with the formation of Gujarat State in the year 1960 under Section 5 of the Electricity (Supply) Act 1948.

Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board
Electric supply at the time of formation of the state in 1948 was available only in the Capitals of the erstwhile princely states and the connected load at the time was less than 500 kW. Thus the organization of the power utility in the state began relatively recently and first electrical division was formed in August,1953 under the Public Works Department. Subsequently a department of M.P.P. & Power was formed in April, 1964 after realizing the need for exploiting the substantial hydel potential available in the river basins. Thereafter, the State Electricity Board in accordance with the provisions of Electricity Supply Act (1948) was formed in the year 1971. Accordingly , all functions of the Department of Multipurpose projects, Power such as generation, execution of hydro electric projects except functions of flood control and minor irrigation were transferred to the Board. Since then the State Electricity Board has made long strides in executing the targets entrusted to it and at present is fully competent in organization and infrastructure to take up any challenges.

Jharkhand State Electricity Board
Before creation of Jharkhand State Electricity Board on 10-01-2001, Bihar State Electricity Board was the predominant entity entrusted with the task of generating, transmitting and supplying power in the State. For augmenting the generating capacity in the state sector, the State Government has incorporated two companies, viz Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (TVNL) for implementing the Tenughat Thermal Power Station (total envisaged capacity 1550 MW) and State Hydroelectric Power Corporation (BSHPC)for promoting hydro-power in the Renewable Energy Development Agency (JREDA) is being established by the State Government. The Damodar Valley Corporation supplies electricity to bulk consumers in the Damodar river valley area. Presently the supply of electricity in Jharkhand is mainly being met by the State Government undertakings i.e. Jharkhand State Electricity Board and Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (TVNL) and the central Government undertakings i.e. National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

Maharashtra State Electricity Board
The State Electricity Board is formed under Section 5 of the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948, which Is a Central Act. The Bombay Electricity Board was formed on 6th November, 1954 and continued upto 31-3-1957. The Bombay State Electricity Board was formed on 1-4-1957 and continued upto 19th June, 1960. The Maharashtra State Electricity Board came into existence on 20th June 1960.

The Meghalaya State Electricity Board, or MeSEB as it is known, came into being on the 21st January, 1975, consequent upon the bifurcation of the erstwhile Assam State Electricity Board. The bifurcation was an offshoot of the emergence of Meghalaya as a State in 1972.

The objective was to conduct the business of electricity supply under the Ahmedabad City Municipality and District Local Board Electric and Distribution License 1911 (which was later substituted by the Ahmedabad and District License 1944).

Haryana Power Utilities
Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPN) was incorporated as a company under the Companies Act, 1956 on 19th August 1997 and was granted the certificate to commence its business on 18th September 1997. Subsequently, the transmission and distribution businesses of the erstwhile HSEB were transferred to HVPN on 14th August 1998.

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited is a registered company under the Companies Act, 1956 was incorporated on 28-7-1999 and is a company wholly owned by the Government of Karnataka with an authorised share capital of Rs. 1000 crores. KPTCL was formed on 1-8-1999 by carving out the Transmission and Distribution functions of the erstwhile Karnataka Electricity Board.

The Government of Madhya Pradesh vide order dated 1st July, 02 has incorporated Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitran Company Limited as a wholly owned Government of Madhya Pradesh Corporations under the Companies Act, 1956 to undertake activities of distribution and retail supply for and on behalf of Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board in the areas covered by the Commissionaires of Indore and Ujjain.

The Power Department of Sikkim
On May 27,1927,for the first time in the history of Sikkkim,a micro-hydel station was commissioned on the bank of Ranikhola at Lower Sichey Busty,with an installed capacity of 50 KW.This was chiefly to cater the needs of the members of the royal family and Gangtok town.This was distributed through 3.3KV overhead transmission line.

Uttaranchal Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on February 12, 2001 to manage and operate the transmission and distribution of power in the state of Uttaranchal. UPCL was formed with the demerger of UPPCL. The function of generation of power was entrusted to Uttaranchal Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (UJVNL).

Currently, UPCL caters to the distribution functions in Uttaranchal spanning the following 13 districts: Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Hardwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Almora, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Champawat

In July 2002, Delhi Vidyut Board unbundled into five sucessor entities – the three distribution companies, a transmission and a holding company. Two of the three distribution companies have been handed over to BSES, and one to TATA POWER.As a part of its active support to the privatisation process, BSES has recently acquired an equity stake of 51% in two of the three Distribution Companies of Delhi after unbundling and privatization of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board. The two distribution companies, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited covering South and West areas and BSES Yamuna Power Limited covering Central and East regions provide electricity to around 17 lakhs consumers spread across an area of 900 sq kms (approx).

Pursuant to the provisions of Haryana Electricity Reforms Act, 1997, the Haryana State Electricity Board (HSEB) was restructured and by Virtue of first transfer scheme the Transmission and Distribution business was inherited by Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) w.e.f. Ist July 1998.
Subsequently two Distribution Companies UHBVNL & DHBVNL were incorporated as subsidiaries of Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd. Pursuant to second transfer scheme notified on July 1, 1999.
The State of Haryana was carved into two geographically contiguous zones and distribution undertakings and business was segregated into and vested into Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVNL) in respect of the North Zone.

Earlier it was known as the Ministry of Energy comprising the Departments of Power, Coal and Non-Conventional Energy Sources. Electricity is a concurrent subject at Entry 38 in List III of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India. The Ministry of Power is primarily responsible for the development of electrical energy in the country.
