Standby power is power that is consumed by electronic equipment while in a power-off state. Some devices continue to consume power while in a power-off state for legitimate purposes, such as a clock or infra-red receiver required to reactivate the device. Other devices consume power for no useful purpose.

Appliances and other electrical equipment increasingly draw power when they are switched off or not performing their primary function. This "standby power" provides remote control capability, network sensing, digital display and other features. Often, standby power is consumed simply because power supplies remain "on" while their appliances are switched "off".

Pratibha Devisingh Patil inaugurated the National Energy Conservation Day 2007 in New Delhi on December 14, 2007 and presented awards to outstanding performers in energy conservation. The President also addressed the function and gave away prizes to the winners of the children's painting competition.
